Dawn Ranch Lodge is one place you'll want to check in early. There's just too much to enjoy to simply spend the night in a comfortable bed.
Give yourself time to wander the grounds, sample summer fruits, test the waters of the river and pool, and then settle into your cabin to enjoy simplicity at the zenith of comfort. Nestled beneath redwoods and fronting the Russian River, this 15-acre property in Guerneville seems far removed from everyday life. In operation as a summer resort since 1905, Dawn Ranch Lodge is updated to fit the needs of the present, while still respecting the past. Life may have changed, but the setting and tranquillity remain the same.
Cabins and cottages, 53 in total, gleam white with forest green trim. The white-and-bright theme continues inside, where walls reflect light from multiple windows and wicker furniture serves as a backdrop for country-charm fabrics. Few distractions compete with the setting; there are no televisions, phones or clock radios.
Even the bathrooms are little changed from their origins, though all are in excellent working order. Free-standing basins and tubs, adapted as showers, and wall pegs for towels extend the simplicity.
Leave your testing of the natural fiber luxury bed until you've nothing left to do. Once within its embracing comfort, buried beneath a fluffy down comforter, rising may not be an option.
It's a toss-up as to what is the bigger draw: your cabin or the grounds. The long meadow surrounded by trees and shrubs is perfect for quiet ambling or a lively sports event, and hunger isn't a problem among the ancient orchard bountiful with apple and stone-fruit trees and ringed by densely laden blackberry bushes. A narrow path offers private beach access, while the swimming pool, festooned with lounging furniture and umbrellas, provides a second refreshing option.
Each cabin also has its own outside sitting area to enjoy fresh breezes off the river or the strings of fairy lights that illuminate the evening sky.
A final option for your time is the full-service Roadhouse Restaurant, with a bar featuring fresh organics and an extensive Russian River-appellation wine list. Enjoy the fare within the all-wood, open-beamed dining room or on the deck under huge market umbrellas.
Linger before the fire in the cozy lounge and try your hand at one of the many games available. Then it's off to your cabin for quiet slumber, listening to the sounds of creaking wood and rustling leaves.
